Believe You Me 6 Year feat. Axel Boman & Toshiya Kawasaki
This spring, Believe You Me turns 6 - a lifetime in party years. To celebrate, we'll be joined by two of our all-time favorite past guests- Axel Boman ( Studio Barnhus / Stockholm) & Toshiya Kawasaki ( mule musiq / Tokyo).
Back in 2016, we hosted both Axel & Toshiya for the first time, for what was undeniably a high water mark for us and Portland's dance music community at the time. Between sets from Axel, Ginkgo, & Andy at The Liq, and an afterhours at an erstwhile Odyssey space featuring Toshiya, a Strategy live set, and Ben Tactic, it was nearly 9 hours of steamy, ecstatic, "I can't believe this is happening" rave magic. That night also formed the beginnings of our friendship with Toshiya, who has played with us every year since then. We've wanted to bring Axel back since then, and have hosted his Barnhus label-mates Kornél Kovács & Baba Stiltz in recent years.

BYM founding residents Andy Warren & Ginkgo will be warming this up, and we'll be using our own Danley system for sound at the White Owl Social Club patio.

Our favorite Swede has been having a truly stellar run in recent years. Axel's Talaboman project with John Talabot resulted in one of our favorite albums of the 2010s. Studio Barnhus, the label Axel runs with Kornel Kovacs & Pedrodollar, continues to be a shining light of playful, deep, surprising dance music, with recent strong releases from Bella Boo, Laurence Guy, FaltyDL, Sofia Kourtesis, Shakarchi & Straneus, & Matt Karmil. Axel is an in demand DJ in all corners of the world, a passionate digger and student of music, and one of the most charismatic people you're ever likely to meet. His recent mini LP on Toshiya's mule musiq, Le New Life, shows him in top form, and features one of the standout tracks of 2019 - Chestnut Heartsprite, a 13 minute blast of euphoria that turned any party where it was played into a capital M Moment.

The gravitational force that Toshiya Kawasaki exerts on house music, often behind the scenes, is immeasurable. In 2019, mule musiq (and sub-label's Endless Flight & Studio Mule) celebrated 15 years and over 200 releases from some of the leading voices in the ever-widening field of sophisticated house - DJ Koze, DJ Sprinkles, Peter Inspirescu, Fred P, Echologist, Oskar Offermann, Brandt, Christopher Rau, Laurence Guy, Chaos in the CBD, Lawrence, and past BYM guests Kuniyuki, Eddie C, Gonno, Oskar Offermann, Lake People, and Strategy. A true aesthete in all the sensory domains, his love of food and wine have also inspired our recurring collaboration with him, Club Kantharos, pairing some of Portland's finest winemakers with musical curation from Toshiya and his friends (Superpitcher last year, Axel this year.)
