Portland Fruit Tree Project is collaborating with Jessie Spain of Tree and Ladder Home Orchard Care to bring you a series of amazing winter pruning workshops and spring orchard care workshops. These will be held a various orchard spaces in the Portland area so you can choose a date and location that works for you.

Winter Pruning Workshop Series: Apples and Pears

Increase the beauty and productivity of your apple and pear trees with this hands-on pruning class led by the experienced orchardist Jessie Spain of Tree and Ladder Orchard Care. Timely pruning can improve the shape, strength, and fruit set of your trees, while simultaneously helping to reduce pest and disease pressure. Beginning with a brief introduction to general pruning theory, the class then transitions to working directly with fruit trees, allowing participants the opportunity to practice specific techniques for winter pruning. Our goal is to help you learn how to make the best cuts on your fruit trees with confidence and skill. We will also cover how to apply dormant oil spray to your trees to decrease insect pressure next summer. We will discuss winter espalier pruning as well. This workshop will be held at Belle's Orchard is a lovely space on a large lot connected to a home. - look for the Portland Fruit Tree Project A frame! This orchard has been in their family for generations and is a great place to learn with many ages and sizes of trees.

Large tree? Old heritage tree? A tree that was pruned poorly? Weather impacted tree? Increase the beauty and productivity of your old or rarely pruned apple and pear trees with this hands-on pruning class led by the experienced orchardist Jessie Spain of Tree and Ladder Orchard Care. This class applies to most backyard trees. We will be talking about and demonstrating strategies for how to bring your apples and pears back to better form and greater productivity. This is a great class to help understand the multi-year strategy for returning trees to something that can meet your needs. Timely pruning can improve the shape, strength, and fruit set of your trees, while simultaneously helping to reduce pest and disease pressure. Beginning with a brief introduction to general pruning theory, the class then transitions to working directly with fruit trees, allowing participants the opportunity to practice specific techniques for winter pruning. This workshop will be held at a home site close to the orchard that has some trees that need restoration-type work.

Have an apple or pear tree but you don't love the fruit? Well, this is the class for you. In this workshop, we learn how to change or add a new variety of fruit to an existing tree. We will meet at the Oracle Orchard to see examples of how this has been done successfully and we will be taken step by step through the process. Grafting can be exciting and a bit intimidating but this can be a good place to start!

In this workshop, Jessie Spain of Tree and Ladder Orchard Care will walk us through what we can do in the spring to help manage pests in the orchard all-growing season. We will be trying our hands at fruitlet thinning and socking.
