Action/Adventure is excited to present the first in a new series of literary adaptations. Reworking the classics of literature in our unique aesthetic starting with the First English Novel (according to literary critic Ian Watt anyway): Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe.

Shipwrecks! Pirates! Cannibals! Ruminations on the Bible and the Nature of Providence! The Listing of Pros and Cons! Learning to Grow Crops and Raise Goats! This fake-autobiography/adventure story/early example of naturalistic fiction/religious polemic has a little something for everyone. Defoe was a Puritan who wanted to write a book about Divine Providence; Action/Adventure is a pack of Humanists and Heathens who think this novel is ripe for comedy and fun. Imagine Stephen Colbert—the character, not the actor—stuck in the world of Cast Away.

Combining clown work, scripted scenes, physical and musical montages and Action/Adventure’s signature brand of structured improv, this Crusoe will be told in four parts, similar to Action/Adventure’s original theatrical serials, Fall of the Band and Sidekicks. Also, it’s kind of like how the great classics of literature we now know as novels were originally serialized in literary magazines. (Yeah, we think we’re pretty clever too.) Did we mention there will be goat puppets? And cannibals? Shipwrecks? Good. We thought we had forgotten.

Starring Ian Armstrong as Robinson Crusoe and Yohhei Sato as Friday.
Featuring: Ian Fyfield, Rachel Rosenfeld, Paul Susi, Evan Ward and Greta West.
